Bosnian Culture and Independence Day Celebration

March 1 is Bosnian Independence Day, and the Utica Academy of Science held their first annual "Bosnian Culture and Independence Day Celebration."

On March 1, 1992, Bosnia and Herzegovina became an independent and sovereign state, and only a month after the declaration of independence, it was brutally attacked. Between 1992 and 2007 the State Department resettled 131,000 refugees from war-torn Bosnia Herzegovina in the United States.

Successful speakers, Bosnian music, the traditional folk dance “Kud Ljiljan,” poems, historical lessons, and cuisine filled the cafeteria to honor and celebrate the contributions of the Bosnian community to our community and the City of Utica. This March marks the twenty-seventh year of independence.

Guest Speakers:
Robert Palmieri-   Mayor, City of Utica
Ibrahim Rosic- Director of the Learning Commons at MVCC
Dina Radeljas- Assistant Professor at MVCC
Emina Popricanin- Partner with Hodgson Russ, a law firm with offices across New York State.
Amra Borovic- Senior System/Software Engineer
Merima Smajic - Assistant corporation counsel for the City of Utica
