Kindergarten Field Trip to North Star Orchards

On Wednesday, October 10, 2018, our three #UASCS Kindergarten classes went on a trip to North Star Orchards. Upon arrival, we were greeted and split into two large groups. Group one began the trip on the hayride, while group two started under a pavilion and learned about the seasons and the apple cider making process. While the hayride took us around the property, the driver stopped several times so that the students could learn about everything that they grow on the farm, (apples, pumpkins, blueberries, Christmas trees, corn, etc.).

#UASAtoms also had the opportunity to learn about the property, buildings on the farm and see the cows! Once both groups were able to get through their stations, each class was able to pick a pumpkin to take home. The Orchard was also nice enough to send a box of apples back with us so that we could have time to see everything before it was time to leave. Thank you, Northstar Orchards!

#UASCS Middle School Field Trip to Pumpkin Hollow

On Tuesday, October 30, 2018 #UASCS middle school organized a field trip to Pumpkin Hollow. #UASCS High School Performs Community Service with Utica Mayor Palmieri

“Keep It Clean, Keep It Safe.”

On Wednesday, October 24, 2018, Mayor of Utica, Robert Palmieri, Department Heads, City workers and #UASCS Scholars conducted Quality of Life sweeps – cleaning the west Utica neighborhood streets. It was an excellent opportunity for our students to participate with a Utica Mayor and learn about our Utica community. Students learned that Mayor Palmieri is fully committed to providing Utica residents with a clean, safer place to live and work. Teaching our #UASAtoms the values of citizenship is just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

Utica Mayor Palmieri Tours #UASCS Elementary & High School

On Monday, October 22, 2018, the  Mayor of Utica, Robert Palmieri, toured our new Elementary school and spoke to our Kindergarten class. Mrs. Grabovica, our Student Affairs officer, walked around with Mayor Palmieri, popping in for meet and greets in the classrooms with our teachers and #UASCS Elementary Scholars. After visiting the elementary, the Mayor spoke to our ninth and 10th grade students about the value of community involvement, family and importance of going to college.

Our #UASAtoms questioned the mayor about what he did before becoming mayor, where he grew up, and how he achieved his success.

Thank you so much to Mayor Palmieri for taking time out of your schedule to honor us with this visit. The valuable visits from community leaders are one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

First Grade #UASCS Field Trip to Fort Rickey

On Friday, October 19, 2018, first grade #UASAtoms attended their first class field trip to Fort Rickey Children's Discover Zoo, in Rome, NY.  The zoo provided an ice cream cone full of animal food and #UASAtoms took bits at a time in their hand to feed the deer and sheep through the fence and then fed them the ice cream cone. After stepping into the enclosure, #UASAtoms were able to pet the deer and hug the sheep. Our #UASAtoms were then taken to the dock and were able to feed the fish and ducks, and they loved it!

We then took a wagon ride that drove us around the zoo, where we were able to see all of the animals in their enclosures. After lunch, we were let into the “maternity pen” where the students were able to pet and hold baby goats and their mothers. Following the maternity pen, we went and played in the ball pit. We aren't sure who had more fun, the students or the chaperones! These visits to local zoo's help expose our #UASAtoms to diverse wildlife and are just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

Farmer's Museum Field Trip Through Time for #UASCS Middle School

On Friday, October 19, 2018, #UASAtoms traveled back in time to the Civil War era at The Farmer's Museum in Cooperstown, NY. According to the museum's mission, "The Farmers’ Museum is devoted to preserving America’s rural heritage through interactive exhibits, living history programs, and educational workshops that depict farming and rural life."

Our scholars participated in the 19th century life workshop and had a chance to roll up their sleeves and get their hands with history, art, math, and science in a fun way by training as a Blacksmith's Apprentice. This experience directly reflects the historical unit our #UASAtoms are learning about in their classes at the moment. These hands-on lessons are just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.
