Girls in STEM Expo

On Saturday, April 6, 2019, several female students participated in the STEM Expo for girls at MVCC Alumni College Center. The innovative one-day event was designed to introduce girls in grades 9 through 12 to opportunities in the fields of engineering and science. Eight scholars from our school participated in a challenge to build a tower out of spaghetti, with the tallest tower winning. Congratulations to our students Mia, Italia, and Madison, whose tower won first place!

 

Students Honored at March Assembly

On Monday, March 25, 2019, students cheered for their peers and friends who won the highest Dojo points in their classes, as well as for students who won student-of-the-month awards for displaying acts of caring. The classes of Mrs. Ferguson, Ms. Murray, Mrs. Woodruff and Mrs. Driscoll won the Golden Tray award last month for lining up the safest way and for picking up after themselves.

Dog-Trainer Day at #UASCS Elementary

On Monday, March 25, 2019, #UASCS students enthusiastically greeted two guest speakers who brought along man’s best friend, a dog named Magoo. Dog trainers Catherine Perry and Jesse Woodruff came to teach students about proper dog etiquette. Students learned how to greet a new dog and how to move them through an agility course. All of the scholars loved the opportunity to meet Magoo.

Vista Lanes Kindergarten Trip

On Tuesday, March 26, 2019, Kindergartners took a trip to Vista Lanes Bowling Center. In addition to having a great time learning how to bowl, the students practiced good sportsmanship and the art of encouraging their teammates!

 

STEM Fair at #UASCS Elementary

On Wednesday, March 13, 2019, Utica Academy of Science Elementary School held its inaugural S.T.E.M. Fair. Kindergarten and First-grade students presented their S.T.E.M. projects which revolved around a Scientific Question. Middle School students also displayed several S.T.E.M. projects to highlight how S.T.E.M. evolves over the years at the Utica Academy of Science. Our First Lego League, Jr. Club also put on an exhibition of their Moon Mission Projects, which they presented at SUNY Poly on March 16. Way to go, Atoms! 

Atoms Attract Awards at Science Fair

 
On Saturday, March 23, 2019, ten projects researched and developed by Utica Academy of Science students recently qualified to compete in the 41st Regional Science Fair at Utica College. The projects previously won awards at the UAS school-wide Science Fair, a requirement for eligibility to participate in the Regional Science Fair. Please congratulate all of our hard-working participants, especially those who received the following awards:
 
* Melisa Mia Bajic (Gluten Flour vs. Non-Gluten Flour Cupcakes) 3rd Place in Physical Science and $25
* Naida Mujkic (Are Eyewitness Accounts REliable?) 3rd place in Natural Science and $25
* Felix Paulino (The Cardboard Battery) 4th place and a calculator
* Ella Dzaferovic ( Effect of Clorox on Bacteria) received Asa Gray Biological Society at Utica College special award and $50
* Muamer Huseinovic (Money Is Power) received special Norman P. Bernstein award and $25
* Ella Dzaferovic ( Effect of Clorox on Bacteria) received Don and Sally Majka Award and $50
* Lamija Karovic (The Molding of Homemade and McDonald’s French Fries) received Adam and Betha Lachut special award, along with $50

The Wearing of the Green

On Saturday, March 16, 2019, asea of green decorations swept over the streets of Utica at the city’s recent St. Patrick’s Day parade. UAS students who attended the event celebrated with fellow citizens to build positive relationships with various community organizations represented in the parade.

LEGO League Blasts Off on a “Moon Mission”

On Saturday, March 16, 2019, this year’s first Junior LEGO League event blasted off with a “Moon Mission” theme at SUNY Polytechnic in Utica. The team was formed last December and continues to provide rewarding experiences for all participants.

Celebrating Black History Month and Women's History Month

On Wednesday, March 13, 2019, to celebrate Black History Month and Women's History Month, the UASCS Pre-Calculus class presented projects worked on in pairs. Each team of scholars chose a male or female African American mathematician to study and presented a short story of the mathematician’s life and major contributions to the Math world. Sharing what they learned was a great opportunity for all students to enhance their knowledge of the excellent achievements of Black men and women.

Celebrating Aspiring Young Artists at #UASCS Elementary

On Wednesday, March 6, 2019, our Atoms focused on fingerpainting their way to developing motor skills, decision making, language development, and visual learning skills. The Utica Academy of Science celebrated the artwork of Kindergarten and first-grade scholars during our recent Art Show. Parents, teachers, and students collaborated on a large mural during the event while celebrating the arts as a part of our curriculum.
