Wednesday, October 14th, 2020—An eruption of fun, giggles, and fizzy goodness were had on a crisp fall day. First grade Atoms combined a classic fall item, a pumpkin, with a timeless science experiment, a volcano, to create what will be your new favorite fall activity, a Pumpkin Volcano. Students conducted their experiments over Zoom, and combined baking soda, vinegar, and dish soap in a hollowed out pumpkin. The results, a bubbly fizzy explosion that left the students with smiles on their face. Needless to say, a blast was had by all. For more pictures, please visit our Facebook page.
Wednesday, October 14th, 2020—It’s that wonderful time of year for our high school seniors, SAT testing time. As they prepare and get ready for college, the first step is to take the SAT. Seniors woke up bright and early for their test, and entered through the side door of the building. Students individually had their temperatures checked and proper PPE. Saturday, October 17th, 2020—Middle school Atoms, Hazma and Gideon hit the open waters and face tough competition at this year’s virtual CNY Steamboat challenge presented by the MOST. On Saturday, October 17th STEM students competed in a ‘pop-pop’ or a ‘putt-putt’ boat engineering challenge. Students could compete individually or in groups of 2 or 3. Each team was tasked with not only designing their own boat, but also constructing it. Boats were to be miniature working steamboats powered by only a single tealight candle. In addition, students had to discuss their designs virtually to the judges and describe how their boat was constructed. Hazma and Gideon represented Utica Academy of Science middle school and took home 3rd place. Great job, Atoms! Click here to view this year's competition.
